Description by Simona Iliescu :
I was asked to remodel a basement into a techno and after-hours club. The main obstacles encountered were the small budget of 18 000 euros and the timeframe of only 23 days from the first client meeting to the opening. The space had the advantage of an open, almost square interior. The layout emerged naturally, with the dance floor at the centre, the bar on one side and the slightly raised seating areas along the other walls.
The visual concept of the Avantgarde club was inspired by Vasarely’s optical illusions, which I translated into wall backlit oval-cuts and prints. The visitor is welcomed by eerie oval islands of light radiating from the walls.
Black & white vertical stripes on the wall behind the bar continue on the ceiling to create the illusion of never-ending space. The illusion is enhanced through a mood-altering technique. A colour-changing light system creates drama: it begins with cool blue and gradually mutates to warmer tones as the night deepens. Including the lights around the MDF black-laquered bar.The central dance floor is made of poured epoxy-resin. Surrounding lounge areas comprise custom-made sofas, manufactured from high-density foam and upholstered with suede and synthetic leather.
The illusion of infinity is followed obsessively until it reaches its maximum potential. Here, in the VIP lounge facing the dance floor, the white sofa is like a first step towards a “tunnel through time and space” – which continues in the wall print. The effect is then multiplied to infinity in the lateral walls covered with black glass.
